Esperanza Rising: Vocabulary Activities

According to academic researcher, speaker, trainer, and author, Dr. Robert Marzano, effectively teaching academic vocabulary consists of a six step process. Below, I have not only included a list of Marzano's six steps, but also academic activities related to Esperanza Rising that correspond with each step.

Dr. Marzano's 6 Steps to Effective Vocabulary Instruction

Step 1
The teacher will give a description, explanation, or example of the new term in familiar language to the students.

Step 2
The teacher will ask the learner to give a description, explanation, or example of the new term in his or her own words.

Step 3
The teacher will ask the learner to connect an image with the new term (e.g. draw a picture, symbol, metaphor, or locate a graphic to represent the new term).

Step 4
The learner will participate in activities that provide more knowledge of the words (such as a reading in which the word is central, creating a semantic map of the word, completing a compare/contrast activity with the words after watching a video that includes them , etc).

Step 5
The learner will interact with other learners using the words (a discussion/skit/play/group assignment).

Step 6 The learner will participate in games that provide more reinforcement of the new term (e.g. pictionary, charades, BINGO, jeopardy, etc).

I really like What Does That Mean for a step 4 activity - one suggestion - perhaps add some formatting to the document so their notes don't end up mixed up all over the page. The Spelling City and Crossword activities seem like they might be a better fit for step 6 - to reinforce the terms. The flashcards would work if you emphasize and extension of the initial definitions. In looking at step 4 are there any other ways for them to learn something new/more about the vocab terms? What does it mean is a great one as this has them contemplate the word based on the context. I look forward to what you have to offer for steps 5 & 6!
