Robert Marzano's Six Steps

Step #1:  The teacher will give a description, explanation, or example of the new term in familiar language to the students.

Step #2:  The teacher will ask the learner to give a description, explanation,

or example of the new term in his/her own words.

Have students complete the academic notebook sheet, writing the

definitions in their own words.

Step #3:  The teacher will ask the learner to connect an image with the new

term-e.g. draw a picture, symbol, metaphor, or locate a graphic to represent

the new term.

Students will complete the next section on their academic notebook sheet, drawing an image of the new term.

Step #4:  The learner will participate in activities that provide more knowledge of the words (such as a reading in which the word is central, creating a semantic map of the word, completing a compare/contrast activity with the words after watching a video that includes them etc.)

Students will watch the video on child labor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2M9i1Wy6IU

Students will complete the compare and contrast worksheet comparing the video to the text/vocabulary words.

Step #5:  The learner will interact with other learners using the words (a discussion/skit/

play/group assignment)

Students will practice with flashcards from Quizlet.  http://quizlet.com/4581688/kids-on-strike-flash-cards/

Students will play the What Am I? game.

Step #6:  The learner will participate in games that provide more reinforcement of the

new term (e.g. pictionary, charades, BINGO, 20,000 pyramid/taboo, jeopardy, etc.)

Students will participate in Fly Swat game.

* LOVE the academic vocabulary sheet - great! This will be a great way for the students to make a link between image and word.
* LOVE the video and activity - This is a great elaboration activity. I think the students will appreciate seeing something about "Kids on Strike". Also, the activity will really add to the video. It will be a good connection.
* You could maybe add more quick 5-10 minute vocabulary games in step 6.
*Also, I would elaborate on how the students will interact with the flashcards, if you look at the self assessment she has a section on this and how important it is.

-links to and from wiki work
-I think the vocabulary is written at a simple level and understandable for young students.
-All of Marzano’s steps were listed and content is matched to the steps. Page is easy to read.
-My only recommendation is that the parts that should be printed out by the teacher should be in a word doc form (not docx).
