The Journal of Otto Peltonen

Page history last edited by Betsy Brokaw 12 years, 11 months ago

In this journal Otto Peltonen travels from Finland to Hibbing, MN so his family can be with his father working in the iron ore mines. It is a day by day description of what happened in the mines, what family life was like, and what the working conditions were like in the iron ore mines in the 1900's. Get ready for an easy reading, but very interesting book from a  15 year old kids perspective.

Age Appropriate Material

  • If you are working with 5-8 year old students you might....want to use more pictures and hands on activities. They are able to remember more by looking at pictures and being active. Here is an activity that not only ties into social studies but also can tie into art.

  • If you are working with 9-11 year old students you might....want to show the video on how Hibbing, MN became a town and how the mines were discovered. Before watching the video, the students should learn some of the terms that might appear in the video. Since they are learning so many new terms at this age and trying to retain so much information, it might be best to have them make a picture of what they think the new vocabulary terms mean or what they vision the term is.

  • If you are working with 12-14 year old students you might....want to use the interactive activites like Jeopardy and Powerpoint Vocabulary Review because they are able to work better as a team and they also have a better understanding of the vocabulary words.
