Statement of purpose: As a teacher, there are few responsibilities more important than the responsibility to build students’ vocabulary. We teach vocabulary in any subject to build students' reading comprehension. Students' word knowledge can predict how well students will be able to comprehend the texts they read. With limited vocabularies students will not be able to understand the texts they read, therefore it is very important to spend time teaching vocabulary.

If you are working with:

• 5-­‐8 year old students you might need to simplify the content in the book and lesson materials found on this page to fit students academic level.
• 8-­‐11 year old students this would be a developmentally appropriate book and lesson materials.*
• 12-­‐14 year old students you might add activities to further their knowledge and encourage "digging deeper" into the subject matter as they are more competent to do their own research at this age level.
