Iron-Ore Mining in Minnesota
Hill Annex Mine, Soudan Mine, Millford Mine, Hillrust Mine
Overview
Welcome to our final collaborative project for Social Studies Methods at Bemidji State University. This project was created by Corissa Hanna, Rachel Johnson, Jodell Lox, Kristina Olson, Devon Owings, Ann Thier, and Rebecca Tulechik.
Through out the Building America wiki you find 3 themes embedded in projects, lesson plans, and children's literature. These 3 themes are mining, immigration, and labor issues. At the beginning of this semester we read and discussed a book called Out_of_This_Furnace by Thomas Bell. This book integrates the 3 themes mentioned above. After reading this book each student in this class chose a children's literature book and created corresponding lesson plans and activities. Finally, the children's literature books were divided up among the 3 themes and final projects were created from there. In our final project-Mining you will find the following, which are all linked at the bottom of this page:
- A lesson plan in which students in 4th-8th grade will research 4 mines in Northern, Minnesota. They will then present their findings through a jigsaw activity.
- Ten internet websites that correlate with the lesson plan.
- Ten concepts that correlate with the lesson plan.
- A google earth tour of the mines
- A interview with a retired miner
- Photos and videos of mines and miners
- Children's Mining Literature lesson plans and activities

The VoiceThread looks great! Nice work. Should we also create a timeline of mining in Minnesota?

Kristina, I see that you took the voice thread away. I was going to have you site it for creating the slides and put the date of the interview and whom the interview took place with.
